Resting on Your Period: A Game-Changer for Your Health

Hey there!

I just got back from the Health Optimisation Summit, and every expert I met couldn't stop talking about the incredible benefits of rest, especially for women. Picture this: I used to believe that taking it easy was just for the lazy or the privileged. But wow, was I off the mark! Resting during your period isn’t just okay—it’s absolutely vital. Let me tell you why embracing rest at this time is a total game-changer.

If You Feel Guilty About Resting, You've Been Brainwashed

You’re not alone if you feel guilty about slowing down. I’ve been there too and to be honest, some days, I still am... Maybe it comes from never seeing our mothers rest until they absolutely had to collapse on the couch from sheer exhaustion. Or growing up in a world designed for men, where women are expected to keep up with the same relentless pace.

But here's the thing: women aren’t just smaller versions of men. Our bodies operate differently, and that includes our need for rest.

Have You Ever Felt This Way?

Do you ever feel bad because you can't maintain high energy every day of the month? Or watched your mother or grandmother push through pain and fatigue until they just couldn't anymore? If you’re nodding along, this blog is for you.

If you feel extra tired during your period but push through anyway, I hope these three reasons will convince you to give yourself a well-deserved break.

1. Women Need More Sleep Than Men

Science tells us that women need 8 to 10 hours of sleep, whereas men need about 6 to 8 hours. Our adrenal glands work overtime to produce estrogen and progesterone, but they also have to handle stress hormones. If you’re constantly running on stress, you’re robbing your body of the chance to rejuvenate.

Tip: Try to go to bed before 10 pm. Both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda suggest that early bedtime is crucial for nourishing and building vitality.

2. Resting Balances Your Hormones

It’s not just the physical symptoms like cramps and nausea. Your period brings significant hormonal fluctuations. Resting helps your body regulate these shifts more effectively, improving your mood and mental health overall. You’ll find that resting more during your period can reduce PMS symptoms and make the whole experience more manageable.

3. Resting Helps Your Body Recover

Your body works hard during your cycle to shed the uterine lining, causing cramps, headaches, and fatigue. If you find yourself dreading your period because of these symptoms, it’s a sign you need more rest. Rest allows your body to manage these processes better, reducing discomfort and helping you feel your best.

The Bigger Picture

By prioritizing rest during your period, you’re supporting both your physical and hormonal health. You’re also challenging an outdated system that has long ignored women’s needs. It’s so simple, yet so many of us have been taught to push through and ignore our body’s signals.

If you want to experience less cramping, fatigue, headaches, mood swings, irritability, and anxiety, give yourself that break. Unwind with your favorite snack, dark chocolate, anyone? And please, don’t feel guilty about it. You aren’t defined by your productivity. And remember, if you don’t choose a day to rest, your body will choose for you.

Sending you restful vibes and a reminder to be kind to yourself,

Giselle
